Degustabox November Box

Disclosure: just a reminder really, that I receive a monthly Degustabox subscription box for free for the purposes of reviewing. I do not receive any payments to give opinions.

November is typically a dreary month, with grey skies and cold mornings. Once December comes, there is an inevitable countdown to Christmas, and overall a more cheerful mood. Yet little treats could improve even a miserable day.

Degustabox is a monthly food and drink subscription box. It's an excellent way of discovering new products which have only just appeared in the shops, or those which have been around for a while, but you haven't had a chance to try them yet.

Thanks to Degustabox, I have found new favourites to add to our shopping list, including some products which I otherwise wouldn't have tried.

Each time a monthly box arrives, its contents are a total surprise. You get a good selection of foods and drinks.

If you haven't tried Degustabox subscription box yet, and would like to have a go, I have a £3off discount from your first box (and you can unsubscribe any time), just use code DKRLN when placing an order.

What did we get in November Box Degustabox?

Chez Maximka, food subscription box

Product of the Month is:

Ambrosia Plant Based Custard (£1.95) is the first ever plant-based custard. Fab news for anyone who follows a plant-based diet, whether you're vegan or allergic to dairy.

Made with natural flavours with added calcium, this product is free from preservatives or artificial colours.

I can't say how it compares to the dairy custard from a tin, as I don't buy it. The plant-based custard is creamy, smooth and not overly sweet.

Nutritional information: 122kcal and 14g of sugar per portion (1/3 tin).

Available in Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Tesco.

Chez Maximka, vegan custard

We had this custard with a sticky toffee pudding. It tastes OK, but has a strange aftertaste.

Curious to see what the others think of it, I found out that many people mentioned this custard tasted better when served warm, rather than cold. We had ours cold, as I like the combination of a hod pud and a cold cream/custard/ice cream.

Chez Maximka, vegan custard

Knorr Herby Stock Pot (£1.90) is crafted with the Hairy Bikers.

Knorr Vegetable Stock Pot is one of my kitchen pantry essentials. Whenever I cook soup, or a casserole, I reach for one of these stock pots. Knorr Herby Stock Pot is quite similar, minus some of the vegetables and plus more herbs.

These stock pots add a lovely flavour to a variety of meals (from meat-based to vegan), and you can choose whether to dissolve it in hot water first, or add to the saucepan directly.

Great for risottos, pasta dishes, soup or stew.

A blend of six different herbs in each pot, these pots are gluten free, have no added MSG, artificial colours or preservatives.

Nutritional values: 5kcal and 1.1g of salt per 125ml.

Available in Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Ocado and ASDA.

Chez Maximka, Degustabox food box

Mission Wholemeal Wraps (£1.59) are made with wholemeal wheat flour.

These soft wheat flour tortilla wraps are suitable for vegans.

Add your favourite filling - cream cheese and grilled vegetables, or scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, fold an envelope or a pocket and enjoy.

My guys like when I make the Italian style snacks with wraps - I put slices of prosciutto inside, add grated Cheddar cheese, or mozzarella slices, fold twice, and give it a quick fry with a little bit of oil or butter. Once the wrap is nicely browned on both sides, cut it in half and serve.

You can even make a dessert with wraps, by cutting them into smaller pieces, mixing with melted butter, cocoa, spices and baking in the oven until crispy.

Nutritional information: 186kcal and 0.47g of salt per 90g wrap. High in fibre.

If you struggle a bit with the size of them, the wraps are suitable for freezing.

Available in Morrisons.

Chez Maximka, Degustabox food box

Moo Free Jingle Chums (£0.80) is a dainty dairy-free "milk" chocolate bar.

Ethically sourced and made in the UK, this vegan chocolate treat is shaped into one of the Moo Free Christmas characters.

Nutritional values: 545kcal and 43g of sugar per 100g (one bar is 15g).

I have tried Moo Free chocolate before, and had a nibble of the Jingle Chums square. While smooth and lovely overall, it has a powdery aftertaste, which I find in most vegan chocolate. My son ate the rest, as he's happy with any chocolate.

Available at https://www.moofreechocolates.com, Tesco and ASDA.

Chez Maximka, Degustabox food box

The chocolate bar looks very cute, and will make a nice addition to a vegan-themed Christmas stocking.

Chez Maximka, Degusabox food box

Monty Bojangles Pretzel Parade (£3.95) are a new addition to Monty Bojangles' range. They are described as pretzely white choc chip cocoa dusted truffles.

MB are known for their quirky designs and slightly affected amusing descriptions on the box. Each truffle is wrapped individually for freshness.

You get an intense cocoa flavour, and a hit of sugar. The pretzel pieces are not very noticeable, they are really more of a dust/crumb mix. Not bad at all, but I think I'd have liked bigger pieces of pretzel and some sea salt.

Suitable for vegetarians.

Nutritional values: 595kcal and 39g of sugar per 100g.

Available on Ocado.

Brain Blasterz Sour Boltz & Sour Wormz (£1.29) will thrill the fans of sour candy.

It's a flavour explosion of lip-puckering sourness. Sour Boltz offer four options: Blue Raspberry, Apple, Cherry and Pineapple, while Sour Wormz are a combination of dual flavours: Blue Raspberry-Lemon, Cherry-Cola, and Apple-Strawberry.

Rated a Level 3 on 5-point Sour Scale, these vegan gummies pack a punch.

My boys enjoyed Brain Blasterz, while I wasn't brave enough to try it.

Nutritional values: 339kcal and 61.2g of sugar per 100g

You should receive 1 item in your bag.

Chez Maximka, Degustabox food box

Eisberg Selection Pinot Noir 0.0% or Pinot Grigio 0.0% (£8) is an alcohol free wine based drink.

It's always a pleasure to see an Eisberg product among the contents of Degustabox, as it means we have more choices to offer, when entertaining.

Eisberg Pinot Noir is a soft and smooth alcohol free wine with notes of redcurrant and sweet spices, perfect for a festive punch or mulled wine.

Eisberg Pinot Grigio is a crisp and fresh alcohol free wine, with hints of lemon and flowers.

Nutritional values: 18kcal per 125l serving, vegan.

You should receive 1 item in your box. We got a bottle of Pinot Noir. I plan to make an alcohol-free mulled wine with our bottle, so that the whole family can enjoy it during Christmas festivities.

Available in Morrisons, Club Soda and Amazon.

Chez Maximka, Degustabox food box

Double Dutch Drinks Ginger Ale (£1) is a perfect mixer for a variety of cocktails.

It can certainly be drunk solo, however, it is best served in a cocktail with whisky or dark rum, or even gin. This drink is a unique blend of natural ginger with a touch of cardamom, aromatic and fiery.

Nutritional information: 40kcal and 9g of sugar per 200ml bottle.

Available on the Double Dutch Drinks website, on Ocado and Amazon.

Chez Maximka, Degustabox food box

Clearly Drinks Revolution Waves (£1) is a vitamin spring water, bottled at source from their own Northumbria spring, and infused with all natural flavours.

Feel healthy and refreshed with immune supporting vitamin D.

There are three flavours available, and you should receive 1 item in your box. We got a Raspberry flavour, and enjoyed this refreshing drink. Better served chilled.

Nutritional information: 1kcal and 0g sugar per 100ml. Gluten free, suitable for vegetarians.

Available in Heron Foods and Wholesalers.

Chez Maximka, Degustabox food box

Ocean Spray Cranberry Classic Juice Drink (£1.85) doesn't need any introductions. This is a classic cranberry drink, vibrant in colour and flavour, zesty, refreshing and well-balanced.

Drink it on its own, with ice, or make a cocktail, using Ocean Spray as a base for a variety of drinks, both alcoholic and alcohol-free. You can also make festive cranberry and cream jellies.

There are no artificial colours or flavours added. It's a delicious drink that is bursting with great taste and healthy vibes.

Nutritional information: 23kcal and 4.7g of sugar per 100ml. This drink is a good source of Vitamin C and antioxidants.

Available in the major supermarket chains.

There's just one more day left until December starts, which means the advents are coming!

I can't wait to get started on our Degustabox advent calendars (yes, you read it right, we've got two, a Classic one, and an International edition one). Watch this space!

Chez Maximka, Degustabox food box

Product of the Month:

Mutti Vegan Bolognese (£3.50) is a tomato pasta sauce with vegetables and vegetable protein. As January is often associated with a vegan choice of life (Veganuary), the product of the month reflects this trend.

We're big fans of Mutti products, and I've just had a multi-pack of Mutti Polpa delivered with my latest grocery order. I use Mutti in vegetarian stews, vegetable ragu with okra, sweet peppers and butter beans, currys and, of course, pasta dishes. It's a matter of personal taste but I prefer classic tomato Mutti products (and I don't think psillium, bamboo and linseed belong in a Bolognese ragu, sorry).

Chez Maximka, Degustabox food box

Feedback and gentle suggestions: to give Knorr stock pots a break for a while, and perhaps introduce separate vegan boxes.

I don't know if that's economically viable, but while trying vegan foods could be fun, the vegans themselves wouldn't want a mixed box, and those who don't adhere to a vegan way of life, might not welcome plant-based products in every box.

I would like to see a wider variety of teas rather than the same brand that keeps appearing regularly in Degustabox deliveries.

My favourite part is discovering new brands, that might be available only in ethnic shops or online. Maybe doing limited edition boxes - an international box quarterly or twice a year, like all Italian brands, or French, etc. And an Easter edition, similar to the Degustabox advent calendar, which will be priced accordingly, but also include a more festive selection (you can read about the contents of Degustabox advent calendar among my December posts).

We enjoy our Degustabox deliveries, and look forward to opening each one, and I appreciate how hard it is to choose a new theme and a selection that is different from the previous boxes.

Summer & Get Outdoors Degustabox

What did we get in the Summer & Get Outdoors Degustabox box?

Plantastic Millionaire Flapjacks Choc & Caramel (£2.25) are flapjacks with a vegan caramel and chocolate flavour topping.

While I enjoyed Plantastic Sweet Apricot and Ginger flapjacks from the New Year Degustabox selection very much, I'm less enthusiastic about the new flavour. It has an exceedingly sweet chocolate caramel topping over a dry base of oat flakes. In fact, I couldn't even finish one. Saying that, my older son polished off the whole box later.

This product is 100% plant-based, contains no artificial colours or flavours.

Typical values: 138kcal and 13.5g of sugar per flapjack.

Available at Tesco & ASDA.

Mentos Gum Pure Cherry Chewing Gum (£2.50) is a well-known chewing gum, in a new recyclable paper-based container.

We took it with us on a long car trip to Cornwall (and back), and enjoyed its fruity refreshing taste. The chewing gum has a crispy shell with a delicious liquid filled centre, and provides a long lasting fruity taste. This is a sugar-free treat.

Available in all major supermarket chains.
