The Secretary by Deborah Lawrenson ( review & #giveaway )

It can't be changed now. She is the one who has been changed. She has seen into the dark heart of a country where good people are destroyed for knowing the truth, where history is deleted and rewritten, and the more you know, the more risk you face...

She had always known this job would be a kind of loneliness in the midst of the crowd. It was always a question of trust, an all too precious a commodity in this nervy atmosphere. Moscow extorted a price. They all lived on their nerves, suspicious of everyone and everything.

The Secretary by Deborah Lawrenson is a compelling espionage thriller, set in Moscow, 1958.

There are several themes, masterfully developed in the novel, from power dynamics and ideology restraints to the fundamental basis and balance of truth and deception. Living a lie takes a toll, and when you don't know who to trust, the world becomes truly chilling.

These themes have been explored before in the espionage genre, however, the author expands the concept, challenging our preconceptions by introducing a leading female character into the game of spies.

Blurb:

The Secretary

Moscow, 1958. At the height of the Cold War, MI6 secretary Lois Vale is on a deep cover mission to identify a diplomatic traitor. She can trust only one man: Johann, a German journalist also working covertly for the British secret service. As the trail leads to Vienna and the Black Sea, Lois and Johann begin an affair as love grows, so does the danger to Lois.

A tense Cold War spy story told from the perspective of a bright young working class woman recruited to MI6 at a time when men were in charge of making history and women were expendable.

Authentic and historical details are provided by the 1958 diary kept in Moscow by the author's own mother, who worked for British intelligence.

Lois Vale is a MI6 operative, who is sent to Moscow to find out a mole in the British Embassy. She is quickly learning the ropes of her new position, while observing the people and surroundings.

Lois is told that she would never be able to tell anyone what she does. "Oh, you can say you work as a secretary. You must always stick to as much truth as you can. Beyond that, if anyone asks, even your own family, you are simply a young woman who wants to see something of the world".

On the train to Moscow, Lois encounters a mysterious Russian who claims that he knows exactly who Lois is. This confrontation, albeit very short, is just a tiny glimpse into the dangers Lois is facing. Her mission is high risk and treacherous.

The only person Lois can trust is a German journalist, Johann Dreschler, who's working for the British secret service. "He was a trusted and highly effective operator, especially in the political sphere".

Johann is intelligent, astute and attentive. There is a mutual attraction, but is there any hope for a romance amidst danger?

Lois finds herself sharing a flat with Sonia, a volatile, unpredictable woman, who keeps petty grudges against her new flatmate. Sonia's not well-equipped to the tense conditions of life in Moscow.

The claustrophobic atmosphere feels authentic. On the surface, Lois's job is not glamorous, it's very much plain routine, navigating social class inequalities, office intrigues and prejudiced housemates.

The search for answers draws Lois into grave peril, as the walls seem to close in around her. Is there anyone she can trust?

The Secretary is a captivating thriller, riveting and unputdownable, meticulously researched and well-written. Lawrenson brings history to life with this superb story of trust, love and betrayal. A book not to be missed!

A Skye Full of Stars (Skye Sisters 2)

Under the winter stars, anything is possible…

Ezzie Wynter can’t wait for Christmas on the beautiful Isle of Skye. Her island home sparkles at this time of year thanks to the snow-capped mountains and frosty winter walks, topped off with family gatherings with those she loves the most.

But her peaceful Christmas idyll is upended when she hears that the Larson family – the owners of Rothach Hall – are flying in from Sweden for the festivities. As Manager of their grand Scottish manor house, Ezzie suddenly has decorations to hang, food to source and itineraries to organise.

Life only becomes more difficult when Mats Larson turns up. The owners’ handsome, self-assured son is used to doing things his own way – and he is only another headache to add to her overflowing list.

Yet when unexpected visitors arrive looking for Ezzie, nothing else matters as she is left questioning everything she ever knew about herself. But amidst the Christmas chaos, she might also discover that, when all is lost, it’s sometimes those we least expect who come to our aid…

A beautiful, escapist festive tale to curl up with by the fire this Christmas.

Christmas at Polkerran Point by Cass Grafton (review + #giveaway)

Chez Maximka

"The sky wore a pastel-blue cape, with gossamer strands of feather-like clouds trailing its length. The sea glistened under a weak sun, and although the strong wind whipped the sea into white caps, crashing against the rocks beneath the lighthouse, the water barely rippled where it entered the embrace of the cove".

Isn't it a beautiful description of the Cornish coastline?! If you love Cornwall and books set in this distinctive location, you might be pleased to know there is a new book out -

Christmas at Polkerran Point by Cass Grafton.

This cosy romance set in Cornwall is the third book in The Little Cornish Cove series, which reads perfectly as a standalone. I read the first book a few years ago (see The cottage in a Cornish cove), and was happy to re-visit Polkerran Point and get re-acquainted with some of the characters from book one.

Blurb:

Christmas at Polkerran Point

Fate may have brought them together but secrets seem destined to keep them apart...

An accident and a lost passport mean Gemma's six-month sabbatical to go travelling is not off to a strong start. She heads to Polkerran Point to stay at her aunt's while her new passport is processed and to find temporary work in the meantime.

Enter musician Matt. Newly moved into a secluded, renovated mill - complete with a recording studio - Matt is preparing for his band's big reunion. Focused on writing new music for the album, he needs a live-in housekeeper.

Even as sparks fly, Gemma can sense Matt's keeping secrets and with her role ending once Christmas is over, will there be anything to keep her in Polkerran?

Gemma Merriott is recovering from a scary accident on her trip abroad. Having lost all her travelling possessions and a passport, she arrives to Polkerran Point to stay with  her aunt and recuperate. While waiitng for her passport, and dreaming of travelling around Europe, Gemma is looking for a temporary job.

"The die had been cast. Gemma's plans had fallen foul. Instead of exploring pastures new, she would be in the small Cornish village of Polkerran Point for the foreseeable, and... her aunt had been kind enough to invite her to stay..."

As a child, Gemma enjoyed visiting her aunt and spending time in the harbour.

It so happens, that there is a job available - as a housekeeper to a reclusive musician Matt, who stays in a newly renovated mill. Years before, Matt used to be a guitarist in the famous band. Now that the band reunion is looming, he is engrossed in his work on a new album. Domestic chores are not his forte, he needs someone to organise his life for him, and around him.

Matt appears to be a grumpy, self-absorbed arty type, not capable of looking after himself, always relying on someone else to provide him with daily comforts, from adoring adoptive parents to the housekeepers. A man-boy in some aspects...

Gemma is not sure whether she even wants to work for Matt, but the job comes with a small cottage to live in, and the money is decent.

You feel a tad sorry for bubbly Gemma, who loves her food but has zero talents in the cooking department.

The atmosphere in the house is strained, and it looks like Matt has some secrets from his past that he does not want to share.

"Rather than rigidly entrapped in the past, Matt seemed haunted by it. Lost and uncertain how to find his way forward".

Despite his aloofness, Matt is the man who sets Gemma's heart aflutter. She is intrigued. "Matt was a strange mixture, one minute dismissive, the next a vulnerable, wounded figure who needed... what, exactly?

Living together at the mill, they learn to trust each other and break down the barriers holding them back.

Once Christmas is over, will Gemma resume her travels, leaving Polkerran Point behind?

Gemma and Matt are both likable, yet some of their habits might leave you exasperated.

Gemma is a sweet woman, with a big appetite and an excessive love of all things Christmas-related. The way she obsesses with Christmas decor probably hints there is something missing in her life.

And Matt, as much as he is busy, surely he is capable of putting his dirty clothes and wet towels in the washing machine? There's nothing remotedly romantic about washing someone else's undies.

There is a whole gallery of supporting characters providing a comic relief to the more dramatic storylines.

Just the other day I was talking about a different book set in Cornwall and mentioned the hostile locals. This village is the exact opposite - openly nosy, quirky and warm-hearted.

Anna who is the main character in book 1 of the series, is a hard-working owner of a popular B&B. She is also a talented baker, and has her hands full, yet kindly allows a daily stream of visitors.

In her place, I would dread brace myself every morning, expecting being invaded by the over-friendly locals who have no boundaries. They come daily, expecting being served free hot drinks and pastries. This sounds a bit intrusive. Anna is a saint to put up with this.

This book is the quintessential festive reading, full of mischief, nostalgia, amusing word puns. Some of the scenes, like the Christmas fayre, or the ceremony of switching on the Christmas lights in the harbour, make me think of what it would be like to spend a winter holiday in my favourite location. I often watch online the Christmas lights switch-on in Mousehole on webcam, and hope one day to see it in real life.

This story will delight the fans of Phillipa Ashley, Cressida McLaughlin, Emma Burstall and Trisha Ashley, and will make a lovely festive gift.

I believe this book would make a great Hallmark or Netflix Christmas film.

Christmas at Polkerran Point is a charming, sparkling seasonal read, light, funny and delightful.

Under a Summer Skye by Sue Moorcroft ( review + #giveaway )

modern romance set on Skye

"These beautiful surroundings were her happy place, where she breathed the clear Skye air and relished the peace and serenity of the island".

Under a Summer Skye by Sue Moorcroft is a contemporary romance set on the Isle of Skye.

Blurb:

A Scottish island. A stranger from the mainland. A summer of possibilities...

Escape to the Isle of Skye this summer with the Sunday Times bestselling author, and lose yourself in the first book of the Skye Sisters Trilogy.

A chance encounter is about to change everything for Thea Wynter.

The moment she arrived on the Isle of Skye, life changed for Thea. Running from a succession of wrong turns, she comes to the island in search of blue sea, endless skies, and mountains that make the heart soar. Here, she feels at peace.

As head gardener at Rothach Hall, life is exactly how she wants it, with her days spent working in the glorious clifftop garden and her evenings in the cosy village pub.

But an encounter with a stranger from the mainland brings with it an unexpected turn - and she is left wondering whether he is friend or foe.

It seems that even on Skye, life can catch up with you, and Thea is soon faced with the past she left behind - and with it, the family she's never met...

From old lives to new beginnings, lose yourself on the beautiful Isle of Skye with Thea as she discovers how many possibilities life can truly hold if you look hard enough.

Thea Wynter works as a head gardener at Rothach Hall, an old manor on the Isle of Skye, rescued from falling into ruins by a successful couple. Thea enjoys her job, it makes her feel fulfilled. She also feels safe in the near-obscure environment, where nobody is aware of her past.

For the last eight years Thea has been hiding from the wide public after an accident that has shattered her world.

Thea and her two sisters have been adopted into a loving family. There is a great bond between the sisters. One is a successful lawyer, another works as an assistant manager at Rothach Hall.

Yet there is also a yearning gap in Thea's heart and mind. What is her true identity? What circumstances have brought her to be adopted?

A chance encounter with a handsome stranger seems to become a catalyst for a series of events that bring more questions than answers. And the past cannot stay hidden forever.

Deveron Dowie has his own skeletons in the closet. The recent dramatic events including the collapse of his business and a personal betrayal cloud his judgment and he accepts a rather questionable job,  writing commision pieces for the clickbait celebrity website on the "Where are they now?" series. Thea's story brings him to Rothach Hall. Meeting Thea makes Dev re-think his priorities.

Accepting that nobody is perfect might be one of the ways of moving forward. What do you do when everything that seems stable comes into question?

Ever since I first read a book set on the Isle of Skye (Wildfire at Midnight by Mary Stewart) as a teen, I was fascinated by this unique location, and it has become one of my favourite fiction settings.

Sue Moorcroft creates an evoctive, atmospheric setting for her latest novel.

This is the sixth or seventh book by the author that I've read. I love Sue Moorcroft's depictions of nature and landscapes. She has a talent for creating a vivid scenery in just a few sentences, for example, "Above the road, rock crags punctuated slopes green with trees, white cottages with slate roofs half hidden in their midst. A sea eagle spread its wings and soared between pearly grey sculpted clouds lit on one side. It felt unreal, like being part of a landscape painting on a wall".

There are several themes going on: how we perceive ourselves based on our origins (or the lack of knowledge of our true origins), family loyalty and how far we're ready to sacrifice for the family allegiance, the dark side and mob-like power of social media trolls and more.

Thea has made a terrible mistake of judgment. Has she paid enough in anxiety, hiding from the truth?

There is an abundance of supporting characters, which are drawn effortlessly and convincingly, from an elderly couple next door to the self-centred influencer Fredek.

The so called influencer character is a bit of a parody. They are mercenary, manipulative, scheming and totally oblivious to anyone else's feelings.

There's a couple of things that make this book a mixed bag for me.

A. the dog's antics. It appears to be a trend in contemporary romance that the presence of a companion animal becomes a must. Sometimes it is integral as part of the plotline, sometimes it's used as a trope to show the sensitive side of the main character. And while some readers will be undoubtedly rolling their eyes at yet another dog that takes too much page-space in the story, for the canine fans this could be one of the major attractions.

B. There is a pretty graphic creative sex scene that might offend some readers. As I have a lot of blog readers from the States who prefer the so called clean romance, the frisky scenes might ruffle some feathers.

Under a Summer Skye is an uplifting and enjoyable story of secrets and lies, family loyalty and betrayal. Sue Moorcroft blends authentic location detail with emotional drama and plenty of light-hearted notes.

A lovely diversion for a holiday afternoon.

This post is part of the blog tour for Under a Summer Skye.

Many thanks to Sue Moorcroft and Rachel's Random Resources for my e-copy of the book!

The Secret Daughter of Venice by Juliet Greenwood (review + #giveaway)

historical fiction set during WWII

"She could sense it. Now, more than ever, she knew she had to find out about her past, or her future would never be truly her own".

The Secret Daughter of Venice is a historical novel, set in England and Italy during and after the WWII.

Blurb:

The paper is stiff and brittle with age as Kate unfolds it with trembling hands. She gasps at the pencil sketch of a rippling waterway, lined by tall buildings, curving towards the dome of a cathedral. She feels a connection in her heart. Venice.

England, 1941.

When Kate Arden discovers a secret stash of drawings hidden in the pages of an old volume of poetry given to her as a baby, her breath catches. All her life, she has felt like an outsider in her aristocractic adoptive family, who refuse to answer any questions about her past. But the drawings spark a forgotten memory: a long journey by boat... warm arms that held her tight, and then let go.

Could these pictures unlock the secret of who she is? Why her mother left her? With war raging around the continent, she will brave everything to find out...

A gripping, emotional historical novel of love and art that will captivate fans of The Venice Sketchbook, The Woman on the Bridge and The Nightingale.

Kate Arden feels suffocated by the confines of Arden House. Snatched from everyone and everything she knew, she was brought to England as a little child and adopted by the Ardens. Though loved by her sisters, and being treated kindly by her step-mother, Kate feels she doesn't belong here.

All questions about her past are left unanswered.

Kate is a talented artist, and dreams of studying art, but Leo Arden, her strict father, doesn't want her to move to London. She's always been interested in sketching and drawing, and some suppressed distant memories suggest that she might have had an inspiring teacher.

"...drawing had always been her refuge, the one thing she could hold onto from her past and that elusive memory of the woman - who had surely been her mother - holding her, guiding her, encourgaing her".

Her late (adoptive) mother left illustrated Shakespeare's volumes to all her daughters, with messages hidden inside. One day, after examining the volume once again, Kate realises that the book cover has something hidden within the finer leather. There is a selection of drawings that might reveal the secrets of Kate's past, and possibly her true mother.

"Somewhere here lay the secrets of her past, and the reason Leo Arden brought her from the warmth of grape vines and olives to the frigid winter of Arden House".

The pater familias is the product of his generation and social status. Leo Arden believes he knows best what his womenfolk need. Children have to be obedient. The whole family tiptoe around him, not daring to provoke him or displease. If only he would tell Kate what she desires to know.

Instead, Kate is left to find her true origins, by solving the clues left to her, and some hints from her old teacher.  Her early memories come as day dreams, and they are all about distant shores, warmer climes, and gentle hands that cherished her.

"She shivered, remembering the deep cold that had settled in her bones in her first terrified days at Arden House; and the feeling of absence - absence of familiar heat, of earth brittle with lack of moisture and yet rich with the scent of lemons and olive groves, rosemary and wild thyme. The absence, most of all, of love".

Unfulfilled as an artist, and unable to pursue her painting until the war is over, Kate uses her artistic skills to alleviate the suffering of the most vulnerable. Working with young children who've lost everything during the Nazi raids, she proves to be a talented and compassionate teacher.

"She was going to escape! Her life was going to be her own, at least. and perhaps she could use that freedom to follow the clues left to her by her mother and find her, wherever she might really be."

Along Kate's tale we follow the story of Sofia, who is looking for her daughter in Italy, while the war is raging around. Sofia is a talented artist herself. Rather than return to New York when she still could, she stays in Venice, to find answers to the "question that had, in the midst of all her riches and success, eaten away at her, leaving her hollow inside".

Will mother and daughter be able to discover what's happened to each other? Will Kate at last know who she really is?

The plotline settings alternate between England (Warwickshire, West Midlands and Cornwall) and Italy (Venice and Naples).

I loved the Cornish setting, and the descriptions of the sea... the old cottage that used to be the artists' haven, the gallery at St Ives.

The secret daughter of Venice is a moving story of secrets and deception, fractured families and tragedies, and being true to oneself.

Juliet Greenwood captures the time and social setting beautifully. The descriptions of hardships of life during the war and human suffering are poignant and harrowing (e.g. the scene of the baby rescue after the raid is heart-stopping). Evocative, vivid, inspired. Highly recommended.

Author Bio –

Juliet Greenwood is a historical novelist published by Storm Publishing. Her previous novel, The Last Train from Paris, was published to rave reviews and reached the top 100 kindle chart in the USA. She has long been inspired by the histories of the women in her family, and in particular with how strong-minded and independent women have overcome the limitations imposed on them by the constraints of their time, and the way generations of women hold families and communities together in times of crisis, including during WW2.

After graduating in English from Lancaster University and Kings College, London, Juliet worked on a variety of jobs to support her ambition to be a full-time writer. These ranged from running a craft stall at Covent Garden to running a small charity working with disadvantaged children, and collecting oral histories of traditional villages before they are lost forever. She finally achieved her dream of becoming a published author following a debilitating viral illness, with her first novel being a finalist for The People’s Book Prize and her first two novels reaching #4 and #5 in the UK Kindle store.

Juliet now lives in a traditional quarryman’s cottage in Snowdonia, North Wales, set between the mountains and the sea, with an overgrown garden (good for insects!) and a surprisingly successful grapevine. She can be found dog walking in all weathers working on the plot for her next novel, camera to hand.

"It is unwise to write all this, for I am not so artless that I don't know that it amounts to a confession... Perhaps I should burn these pages".

The Maiden of Florence is a historical novel, set in 16C Florence and Venice. This is a gripping, heart-rending story of a remarkable woman.

Blurb:

"My defloration was talked about in all the courts of Europe. The Prince boasted of his prowess, even as preparations were being made for his wedding, as boldly as if he had ridden across that causeway with bloodstained sheet tied to his lance".

1584, Italy: Twenty-year-old Giulia expects she will live and die incarcerated as a silk weaver within the walls of her Florentine orphanage, where she has never so much as glimpsed her own face. This all changes with the visit of the Medici family's most trusted advisor, promising her a generous dowry and a husband if she agrees to a small sacrifice that will bring honour and glory to her native city.

Vincenzo Gonzaga, libertine heir to the dukedom of Mantua, wants to marry the Grand-Duke of Tuscany's eldest daughter, but the rumours around his unconsummated first marriage must be silenced first. Eager for a dynastic alliance that will be a bulwark against the threat of Protestant heresy beyond the Alps, the Pope and his cardinals turn a blind eye to a mortal sin.

A powerful #MeToo story of the Renaissance, based on true events.

We meet Giulia as she looks back at her life and writes her story. The memoirs are Giulia's way of communicating to her late mother, who she never knew as a child.

"Those events are almost thirty years old, but I remember them as though they happened thirty days ago, though I have tried to bury the memories. Nearly every player in this story is dead. It is only now that what happened can be told by me, not by the men - and woman - who decided my fate".

Growing up in an orphanage in Florence, Giulia learnt the art of silk weaving. Abandoned as a newborn at the portico of the Innocenti orphanage, she knows nothing of her origins and dreams of being taken away one day by her father. But nobody claims her as their own, and her life is sad and cold. Children are brought up without love or compassion, and are reminded daily they are the fruit of sin.

One day Giulia is brought into the Lady Prioress's parlour to be displayed in front of the important visitors. Giulia is chosen to represent her city and carry out a sordid task "with grace and diligence, in gratitude for the care that has been taken of her".

Defenceless and vulnerable, Giulia cannot refuse her superiors. She is also promised money and a husband by the end of her ordeal.

The young prince of Mantua, Vincenzo Gonzaga, has failed to consummate his first marriage. His family is eager for him to get married again and be allied with the Dukedom of Tuscany. To squash the rumours that he is incapable of consummating the marriage, the Prince has to prove his virility, and the witnesses will have to ascertain the proof. If he succeeds the test, he will marry Lady Leonora. And Giulia is chosen for her beauty, purity and lack of family who would protect her honour.

And thus Giulia's story unfolds, as written by her thirty years later.

Will she be able to find happiness after the fateful events? Is there ever an escape from the past?

The novel is based on true events. The author mentions the correspondence in the Medici archives, with the explicit details, which has been used as a source of inspiration. There is not much known about Giulia herself. Mezzacappa gives voice to a woman who has become a footnote in history books.

I found it hard to read the first part of the book, where there is too much emphasis on the physical side of Giulia's plight. While I understand the significance of the detailed description of her torment, it felt unnecessarily prolonged and graphic, and uncomfortably voyeuristic.

Deprived of human touch and love in the orphanage, Giulia is looking for any crumbs of affectiom where there are none. Her story is harrowing, yet also redemptive.

The Maiden of Florence is a poignant evocation of the aspirations, hopes and healing, human suffering and spiritual integrity. Masterfully researched and elegantly written, the book shines a light on the struggles of the Renaissance women.

Potential triggers: rape/sexual abuse, murder.
