Chez Maximka, Degustabox advent calendar

Day 20:

Cheez-It Cheese & Chilli 150g (£2) is a thin and crispy snack baked with 100% real cheese, with no artificial colours or flavours.

Crafted with care and ethically sourced, this premium sugar adds a rich, treacle-like depth to your recipes.

This unrefined natural sugar has been very carefully produced to lock in the natural molasses of the sugar cane, thus adding a distinct unique rich flavour and beautiful colour.

I used some of this sugar to make non-alcoholic mulled wine, with lots of warm spices and oranges.

Available in all major supermarket chains.

Chez Maximka, Degustabox advent calendar

Day 22:

Vidas Drinks (£2) are all-natural beverages that fuel your day, without the extras found in conventional drinks.

Chez Maximka, Degustabox advent calendar

Day 23:

St Dalfour Apricot Fruit Spread (£3.25) is a delicious apricot preserve made near Bordeaux in France.

One of our family favourites, St Dalfour apricot fruit spread is 100% from fruit. No added sugar, it's gently cooked with vine-yard ripened grape juice and fruit juices.

It's sweet, tangy and very tasty. Great with croissants, and other sweet bakes.

My guys love baked camembert. I usually score the top and add a couple of tablespoons of jam/preserve. We tried it with apple, pear, pineapple and other preserves, but keep coming back to the apricot one, as in our opinion, it works perfectly with gooey melting cheese.

Available in the major supermarkets and on Ocado.

Chez Maximka, Degustabox advent calendar

Day 24

Horlicks Chocolate (£3.75) is a traditional malty hot chocolate.

High in Calcium, Zinc and Vitamins C, D and B12. Just add hot water to make a creamy, malty hot chocolate. Traditionally crafted using malted wheat and barley, this is a warming comforting drink, perfect for the cold winter evenings.

Nutritional values: 119kcal and 15.4g of sugar per 32g serve.

Available in all major supermarket chains.

Bella's Countryside Christmas by Claire Huston

Christmas romcom

"That was it. She needed a Sarah Connor-style life makeover. Without the guns".

Don't worry if you think you're having a déjà vu moment, I did a cover reveal for Bella's Countryside Christmas only recently.

Since then, I've read it, and it happened to be my first Christmas book of the coming festive season.

Bella's Countryside Christmas by Claire Huston is a sweet romantic comedy, and the latest in the Love in the Comptons series.

It was lovely to revisit the village of Haileybrook, and catch up with some of the characters who have appeared previously in the series. All the stories are separate, and each reads as a standalone.

Bella’s Countryside Christmas

An uplifting festive romance perfect for fans of Hallmark Christmas movies and authors such as Phillipa Ashley, Trisha Ashley, Sue Moorcroft, Rebecca Raisin and Donna Ashcroft.

Fleeing her heartache and horrendous job, Bella stumbles upon a December wedding in the beautiful village of Haileybrook and the spirit of the season moves her to act as a fake date to handsome stranger Jack.

Jack and Bella hit it off, but Bella has to leave in a hurry and their magical evening soon becomes nothing more than a blissful memory.

A year later, Bella is returning to Haileybrook, seeking a fresh start and a quieter life. With a new job close to her cosy cottage home, a peaceful Christmas is surely only days away.

But it’s not long before family surprises, small-town feuds and romantic drama disrupt Bella’s plans, and she has to wonder if being alone is what she really wants for Christmas …

Trying to escape the most boring work-related pre-Christmas evening do, Bella decides to visit a church in the neighbouring village of Haileybrook. While admiring the interior and Christmas decorations, she inadvertently overhears a conversation between two strangers. One of them departs, leaving the other in a pickle. There is a wedding happening in the next hour, and Jack's plus-one has cancelled on him.

Bella volunteers to act as a fake date, taking pity on Jack, who just happens to be very handsome. As the day unfolds, Bella comes to realise that Jack's mates are rather dismissive of him, and totally take him for granted.

"A ghostly hand squeezed Bella's heart. She knew what it felt like to be rejected and unfairly maligned. And she wasn't about to let these people belittle Jack for being a decent person whose main fault seemed to be that he wasn't rich".

There is an immediate chemistry between the two, they feel comfortable in each other's company and enjoy a friendly banter. The evening turns truly magical. However, family business makes Bella leave the wedding party in a hurry.

Hypnotized by the beauty of the countryside around Haileybrook, Bella decides to drastically change her job and move away from London to the serene location of happy memories.

A year later she gets a job in the Brookfield retirement village, finds a cosy little cottage to live in, and dreams of a peaceful festive season. This move is supposed to be a beginning of a more relaxed life.

"She had moved to Haileybrook to concentrate on herself. She would start her job tomorrow. Settle in and eventually make some friends, perhaps get a little involved in the local community. Romance was the last thing she had planned."

Relaxed life is not on the cards though. Bella is plunged deep into a demanding job, and cannot help but get involved in the local drama and small-scale feuds. And while romance is the last thing on her mind, she has to re-think her ideas of a solitary "peaceful" Christmas. Matters of the heart rarely respect our thoroughly laid plans.

I enjoy Claire Huston's humour, she is brilliant with describing her characters, with their quirks and habits. It's not just the main protagonists, there is a plethora of supporting characters, who are masterfully portrayed to create a convincing and true to life setting. Then there is a witty banter and some very amusing observations that will make you chortle, as you will definitely recognise the pompous and self-centred people and awkward situations.

There is also a dash of cosy crime thrown into the main story, which does not deflect from the romcom.

Bella is a girl after my own heart, as she enjoys her food, and does not count calories (though even I might have raised an eyebrow at her love of cakes, not in a critical but rather admiring way).

Set against the beautiful winter background, Bella's Countryside Christmas makes me dream of a white Christmas. Could we please have some snow?

Fresh and funny, Bella's Countryside Christmas is hugely enjoyable. An excellent premise, and great fun. If you're looking for a seasonal read in the near future, this book is a perfect candidate.

Many thanks to Claire Huston and Rachel's Random Resources for my e-copy of the book!

Advent Degustabox (Part I)

May your holidays

be happy days,

filled with love

and laughter.

And may each day

bring joy your way

in the year

that follows after!

Dark December mornings and early evenings are much more enjoyable, if you have daily little treats of advent calendars to look forward to.

Oh the pleasure of opening the little doors every day! While my sons had their own advent calendars filled with chocolate surprises, I treated myself to a beauty advent calendar. I also received the most glorious Degustabox advent calendar for reviewing.

I loved last year's Degustabox advent box so much, and I knew the new one will be as special. When Degustabox has offered to send one of those beauties for me for reviewing, I was delighted.  The Degustabox Advent Calendar makes an awesome gift. I also bought one of them as a gift for my friend, and she was thrilled with it. She later told me they loved it so much, that they plan to buy one next year.

Chez Maximka, best advent calendars

First of all, it's huge - it includes 24 foods and drinks, and comes in a well-designed sturdy box, which opens into two parts like a gigantic book with windows. The cardboard box is recyclable, and there is no plastic.

There is a little booklet enclosed to give you clues of what to expect in the coming days. You could either ignore it, if you want a complete surprise, or if you're impatient like me, you might have had a quick look and rub your hands with glee.

The selection of products differs from the last year.

What did we get?

Day 1: Love Raw Nutty Choc Balls (£1.69) are a lovely vegan chocolate treat. There are two whole hazelnuts in cocoa coating and nut croquante. Basically, it's a plant-based version of Ferrero Rocher.

Available in all major supermarket chains.

Chez Maximka, Degustabox advent calendar

Day 5: Bounce Indulgent Energy Ball Millionaire/Choc Brownie/Hazelnut Praline (£2) - these balanced nutritious vegan snacks are very popular.
The chocolate coated range is a mini treat of plant protein, filled with a squishy centre and coated with chocolate.

We received a Choc Brownie. Inside there is a tasty nut butter. High in fibre and protein, it comes at 190kcal per energy ball.

Chez Maximka, Degustabox advent calendar

Day 11: Surprise!!!
What's better than getting a surprise? There is a mystery product inside door 11, you won't know what it is from looking inside the booklet.

As it happens, there is a Starbucks Signature Chocolate Salted Caramel behind the door no.11 - ten sticks of hot chocolate with a hint of salt.

Stir with milk and indulge in the chocolatey treat.

Nutritional values: 178kcal and 21.1g of sugar per mug.

Starbucks is known for its high sugar content drinks, and this one is way too sweet. I plan to use it, mixing with plain cocoa to make several cups of hot chocolate, to lower the sugar content.

Chez Maximka, Degustabox advent

Day 12: Filippo Berio Basil Pasta Sauce (£2.50) is an excellent Italian pasta sauce, made with naturally sweet Italian tomatoes, fragrant basil and Filippo Berio Extra Virgin olive oil.
This lovely sauce will enhance many a pasta dish, bringing you the authentic flavours of Italy.

12 days of chocolate giveaway (ends 12 December'22 midnight)

It's that time of the year again, my lovely blog readers! The 12 days of chocolate giveaway has now become an annual event, which I run from 1 December.

I don't know what the future year will hold and whether I might keep writing this blog. I nearly stopped several times this year, so it could be my last 12 days of chocolate giveaway.

I won't be using the pretentious language of certain influencers and say that this chocolate giveaway has been "carefully curated" but I did enjoy choosing different chocolate bars for each day of the giveaway, as well as buying little bits and bobs to go with them. This is a kind of prize I'd be happy to win myself. And it's a different selection every year.

Hope you will enjoy it as much as I do. There is over 1,2kg of chocolate to win!

First of all, let me wish all my blog readers a stress-free Christmas and a happy new year! (and if you don't celebrate Christmas, you're welcome too, I'm wishing you a lovely festive season!).

I love chocolate, and this giveaway is my celebration of all things chocolatey.

Every day I will offer you a chocolate bar and a little something too, edible or decorative.

For 12 days I will be revealing a part of an overall prize, and each day there will be a new question.

As stipulated in the T&Cs below, the number of winners will depend on how many questions the first randomly selected winner will answer. If they answer all 12 questions, they get the whole lot. If they choose to answer less questions, they'll get less prizes, and the remaining part of the prize will go to the next randomly selected winner.

Day 1:
The first day will start with a bang - you'll find a Tony Chocolonely dark milk pretzel chocolate bar as well as one L'Occitane cracker (with mini toiletries).

Day 1 (1 December) question: What Christmas gift are you most looking forward to receiving (or giving) this year? (if you don't celebrate Christmas, then what festive seasonal gift)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 2:
Christmas is not a "proper" Christmas without a good old marzipan, hence today's part of the prize is a Niederegger Apfel Schoko Crumble and Ritter Sport Marzipan.

Question 5 (5 December):
What is your favourite carol?

If you haven't voted yet on ClassicFm for your favourite carol, hurry up, you have until 16 December to cast your vote to be in with a chance of winning a £500 John Lewis voucher. Now that would be a fab prize. I always vote for Gaudete, as it's such a timeless piece, which sends shivers down my spine every time I hear it.

Day 6 (6 December):
Today's chocolate bar is Milka Yogurt. And since we need to take extra care of our skin in winter, here are a couple pf Daily Care Sheet Masks.

Question 7 (7 December):
It's been such a tough year, what with the world news and domestic politics, it is rather depressing. Looking back at 2022, what has been the highlight of the year for you? or the best thing that happened to you or your family in the last year?

For me it's the birth of my adorable great nephew less than a month ago. I am now a great aunt, and I still cannot quite believe it. He's just the cutest little thing.

Day 8 (December 8):
Lotus Biscoff Milk Chocolate and a little Gisela Graham Christmas ornament are today's part of the prize.

Question 8 (8 December):
Again looking back at 2022, what TV shows did you enjoy the most?
(Looking for recommendations, in case I missed something really good).

I love a mix of genres, and some of my favourite TV shows of 2022 were Ghosts, the final season of The Walking Dead, and The English.

Day 9 (9 December):
A new Green & Black's Smooth Mint Intensity bar + Tony Chocolonely Almond mini chocolate bar.

Question 9 (9 December):
Do you have a Christmas jumper?

I just bought a Batman Christmas jumper for my younger son for him to wear on the school Christmas jumper day. Not sure what's the connection between Batman and Christmas, but he loves it.

Day 10 (10 December):
Cadbury Winter Wonderland and Percy Pig Sty of Wonder are today's part of the prize.

Question 10 (10 December):
Do you have an advent calendar, and if yes, which one(s)?

My boys opted for Lego Harry Potter (younger son), Lindt chocolate (older son).

Day 11 (11 December):

Cadbury Dairy Milk Oreo chocolate bar and a chocolate Santa coin for today.

Question 11 (11 December):
What are your Christmas Eve traditions (if you have any)? Do you leave a mince pie and milk for Santa?

Day 12 (12 December):
This is the final day of the giveaway, and the final part of the prize includes Lindt Classic Recipe Hazelnut, a bag of Reese's DJ Santa's disco lights and a box of saucer crackers.

T&Cs:

The giveaway is open to the UK residents only.

Please leave your name or Twitter username in the comment if you login as Anon, or I will never know who has commented.

There will be one or more winners, who will receive all the goodies appearing during twelve days of the giveaway.
If the first randomly selected winner has replied to all twelve questions, they will receive the whole lot.
If the first winner answers less questions, they will receive the prizes only from the days they leave their reply.
The remaining prize(s) will be allocated to the next winner(s). Hope I don't have to send twelve different packages.

The more questions you answer, the bigger your prize will be.
Only one entry per person per day/question is allowed.

If you missed a day, you will have a chance to catch up on any other day until the end of the giveaway, as long as it comes in a SEPARATE comment.

Please note, if you answer 12 questions in one comment, it will count as 1 entry.

Once the winner is selected randomly, I will count their replies.
I will contact the winner, who will have 7 days to reply with their address details. Due to the nature of the prize which I hope to dispatch in good time before Christmas, the time limit to get back to me is shorter than usual.

All the prizes are provided by me, and are in no way sponsored by any brand.
This is my way of saying Thank you to my blog readers.

Previous winners are welcome to join in as well, you're not disqualified from winning again, if your name is drawn from the hat.

I will post the prize at my own cost.
If the winner's away when the parcel arrives and is not able to rearrange the redelivery, and if by some chance it is returned to me, please do not expect me to cover the cost of the postage again.
If that happens, the prize will be taken to the local food bank (foods) and charity shops (non-perishables).

I will send the parcel by Royal Mail, tracked and to be signed for.

Any personal data given (basically the winner's address details) will not be shared with any 3rd parties, and will be deleted after the prize is received by the winner.

The giveaway will end on the 12th of December at midnight.

Good luck!
