Degustabox June Box

Degustabox is a monthly food and drink subscription box. It's an excellent way of discovering new products which have only just appeared in the shops, or those which have been around for a while, but you haven't had a chance to try them yet.

Thanks to Degustabox, I have found new favourites to add to our shopping list, including some products which I otherwise wouldn't have tried.

Each time a monthly box arrives, its contents are a total surprise. You get a good selection of foods and drinks.

If you haven't tried Degustabox subscription box yet, and would like to have a go, I have a £3off discount from your first box (and you can unsubscribe any time), just use code DKRLN when placing an order.

What did we get in June Box Degustabox?

Chez Maximka, subscription food box

Let's start with the Product of the Month - Brioche Pasquier PITCH Strawberry Filled Brioche (£1.75, pack of 6).

My sons love Brioche Pasquier products. In fact, when last month my younger son went on his Duke of Edinburgh overnight trip, he asked me to buy several packs of Brioche Pasquier brioche (chocolate-filled) for breakfast for their group of six.

Strawberry filled brioche rolls are individually wrapped and practically mess-free. Great for lunchboxes or taking on picnics or trips. Free from preservatives, artificial colours and hydrogenated fats; suitable for vegetarians.

Top marks from my boys for flavour and texture!

Nutritional values: 125kcal and 8.6g of sugar per brioche.

Available at Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, and ASDA.

Chez Maximka, breakfast brioche

Mentos Discovery 14 Flavours (£1.80) - if you love Mentos, you will be thrilled with this multi-flavoured selection of chewy dragees bursting with fruity flavours.

I always buy a pack or two of Mentos for longer trips, in fact, these dragees have become part of a tradition of travelling to Cornwall by car or train.

Made with fruit juices from concentrate, they present a variety of flavours - raspberry, watermelon, strawberry, pineapple, orange, lemon, blueberry, grape, passionfruit, blackcurrant, lychee, lime, banana and cherry.

Typical values: 10kcal and 1.9g of sugar per 1 piece.

Available at Morrisons and other supermarkets.

Chez Maximka, Degustabox food box

Aero Choco-Hazelnut 90g sharing bar (£1.35) is a new Aero sharing bar. A combination of Aero's signature melt-in-your-mouth bubbles with a hazelnut flavour makes a lovely treat.

Smooth velvety milk chocolate is made with Rainforest Alliance approved cocoa.

A bit too sweet to my taste, but my sons love Aero, and this bar didn't last long.

Typical values: 137kcal and 14.6g of sugar per 2 rows. Suitable for vegetarians.

Available in major supermarket chains.

Back to School & On The Go Degustabox

Welcome to the Back to School & On the Go Degustabox!
Schools have re-opened their doors after a summer break, but these challenging corona times have brought many changes everywhere, including morning breaks and lunch time at school. Hot school lunches are not currently on offer in many schools in order to reduce the number of children gathering together to eat their meals.
Children are eating their lunches in the classrooms. If like many parents, you are struggling with ideas what to add to your child's lunchbox, the latest Degustabox might inspire you to add one or two products to your usual packed lunch.

Degustabox is a monthly food and drink subscription box. It's an excellent way of discovering new products which have only just appeared in the shops, or those which have been around for a while but you haven't had a chance to try them yet.

Thanks to Degustabox, I have found new favourites to add to our shopping list, including some products which I probably wouldn't have tried otherwise.
Each time the monthly box arrives, its contents are a total surprise. Your get a good selection of foods and drinks.

If you haven't tried Degustabox subscription box yet, and would like to have a go, I have a £3 off discount from your first box (and you can unsubscribe any time), just use code DKRLN when placing an order.

What did we find in the Back to School & On the Go Degustabox?

Chez Maximka, ideas for lunch boxes

Many children (and grown-ups too) enjoy smoothies in pouches. They come in convenient servings, you can carry them around easily, and there is a great variety of flavours to choose.
Swisse Me Start Me Chia (£1.80) is a breakfast blend of apple, strawberry, raspberry and blueberry, chia seeds and pomegranate juice.
These healthy smoothies are the quick pick-me-up with no added sugar. They are a source of fibre, low fat, vegan and made with real fruit.
My son tried it, but said that chia spoilt it for him, and he does have a point. I'd rather have a pure fruit and berry blend, not being a fan of chia. If you like chia, you will enjoy it.
Available exclusively at swisseme.com

Chez Maximka, vegan snacks

Sunny Fruit Mix-Ups (£2) are real fruit pieces - sultanas and dried apple juice infused strawberries - with no added sugar. These snacks are great for a packed lunch or when you're feeling peckish.
One serving contains 55kcal ad 10.2g of sugar.
I used two of the mini-bags to make easy chocolate cookies (the recipe is coming soon).
Available in all major supermarket chains.

Chez Maximka, fruit snacks for packed lunch

Simpleas Pea Powered Curls (£1.09) are made from sustainably sourced and harvested Great British yellow peas, which are lovingly baked and not fried.
Every snack is vegan friendly, gluten free, high fibre, high protein and only 88 kcal.
It will work for people with many dietary requirements.
There are several flavours to choose from. We got a Sea Salt & Balsamic Vinegar which is our favourite flavour. Crunchy, vinegary, with a note of sweetness from the peas, they won me over. I would definitely buy them as a healthier alternative to crisps.

Available from WHSmith, Skinny Food Company, Farm shops across the UK and on simpleas-snacks.co.uk

Chez Maximka, vegan snacks

PICK UP! (£0.40 per single bar or £1.69 for a pack of 5) are a lovely sweet treat - a thick layer of chocolate between two crunchy biscuits.
Not all schools allow chocolate snacks, so it might not work as a packed lunch treat for everyone.
Bahlsen biscuits are made in Germany.
You will receive three different varieties - Choco Hazelnut, Milk Chocolate and Choco & Milk.
Avaiable at Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, ASDA, Waitrose, Co-Op, Lidl, Ocado and on Amazon.

Chez Maximka, chocolate biscuits

TREK Salted Caramel Protein Flapjack (£2.50) is a new flavour from a well-known brand.
A delicious smooth slated caramel flapjack is gluten-free, packed with 9g of plant-based protein, making it a perfect slow-releasing energy snack, which will keep you going and leave you feeling fuller for longer.
My elder son enjoys flapjacks in his packed lunch.

plant-based protein foods, Chez Maximka

RXBAR (£2.50) is a protein bar. You will receive one of four flavours.
We received a Chocolate sea salt bar, made with egg whites, almonds, cashews and dates. This is the first time I've tried the RXBAR. There was a bit too much sea salt on top of the bar. I like the combination of sweet and salty, but something about this bar left me thinking they should keep working on that flavour.
Nutritional information: 207kcal and 15g of sugar.
Available at Sainsbury's, Ocado, Amazon and rxbar.co.uk.

Chez Maximka, protein bars

Boundless Activated Cayenne & Rosemary nuts and seeds mix (£1.50 or £1 at Sainsbury's).
The classic taste of rosemary is enhanced by an unmistakeable heat of South American spice. Sweet and spicy, this nuts and seeds mix is gluten-free and vegan-friendly.

The Great British Porridge Co (£1.50) makes a quick and easy breakfast option. This is a gluten-free porridge made with 100% natural tasty ingredients.
There are five flavours to choose from, for the morning boost. You will receive a sample. Full size packs are available at Sainsbury's and Waitrose or at thegreatbritishporridge.co.uk.

Chez Maximka, gluten-free porridge

Swizzels Great British Puds (£1) are vegan chew bars. Great British Puds take the flavours of the nation's most-loved traditional puddings and see them transformed into unique chew bars.
They were created by a competition winner, Tracy-Jane.
Flavours include Sticky Toffee Pudding, Lemon Meringue Pie, Rhubarb Crumble and Apple Pie & Custard.
Nutritional information: 64kcal and 10g of sugar per serving of two pieces.
Available at selected ASDA, Morrisons, Co-Op, One Stop, B&M, Home Bargains, McColl's, Premier and Spar stores.

Chez Maximka, vegan sweets

Capsicana Mexican Chilli and Honey Cooking Paste (£1.50) is based on the dish "Puerco al horno con salsa de chile y miel". It's created with Mexican grown chipotle and ancho poblano chillies for a sweet and smoky flavour.
It is great with chicken, pork or vegetables, and is perfect for fajitas, BBQs and marinades.
Available at Sainsbury's, Waitrose and Ocado.

Chez Maximka

I was glad to see Twinings Cold Infuse (£3.79) included in the box. It was one of the products we used extensively in summer, though different flavours from the one we got. I even took two Twinings Cold Infuse plastic pots with us, when we went to Cornwall for a week. It is so easy to use it, just add a few teabags to the big jug of cold water, and later enjoy a flavourful and refreshing drink.
Available in all main supermarket chains.

Chez Maximka, iced drinks

Master Café Iced Coffee Latte/Mocha/Classico (£1.50) is a lovely treat for all fans of iced coffee.
Many iced coffee brands are over-sweet and milk-heavy. This is a lower-calorie, low-dairy authentic iced coffee.
Enjoy a punchy Classico, indulgent Latte or chocolatey Mocha.
Available at snaxemporium.com, Amazon, selected Budgens, Londis and other convenience stores.

And finally, there was a gift enclosed with the main selection - Drink Me Chai Spiced Chai Latte.
It promises a taste of an authentic spiced chai latte with a frothy and creamy texture. It contains less than 1% caffeine and is gluten-free and suitable for vegetarians.
This creamy sweet drink with the flavours of cinnamon, ginger and cloves is lovely on a cold rainy day, when you feel like having a treat.
A full tub costs £2.30, and is available in all major supermarket chains.

It's nearly time for the next Degustabox delivery, and we can't wait to see what will arrive.

Apple cereal muffins

English apples

Apple season is upon us. We have several apple trees in the garden, including two old trees, which Eddie loves to climb on. These two trees have eating apples which are quite tart in taste. They're best picked by the end of September, and keep very well in boxes over winter, getting sweeter and sweeter.
I don't know what the variety is, they are not Gala or Braeburn. And we've got a big crop again this year. A lot of our neighbours have apples of their own, and you often see buckets of apples outside homes, offering them for free.

English apple varieties

I also have a young Golden Delicious tree, which my Mum planted a couple of years ago, and this year we had quite a few apples. They were on a small size but pretty good.

Needless to say, there are just too many apples for us to eat. I still have some of the apple preserves left from the last year. And I've been offering apples left and right to anyone who's willing to take them.
Now is the season, when I'm trying to use apples as much as possible. Thankfully, we love them in all kinds of bakes.
Yesterday morning I was baking a batch of apple muffins.

what to do with apple glut

Apple cereal muffins
Ingredients (makes 10-11)
2 medium apples
2 medium eggs
150g dememare sugar
125ml milk (plant-based or dairy)
80g butter, melted
250g self-raising flour
1tsp baking powder
1/2tsp cinnamon
a handful of cereal as a topping, or nuts (pine nuts or flaked almonds)

Start by grating two apples. You don't have to peel the apples, it will only add to the texture of the cupcakes. In a big bowl mix the grated apples, demerara sugar and two eggs. Add the flour, milk, melted butter, baking powder, cinnamon and mix well.

Spoon the cake mix into the paper muffin cases and sprinkle the cereal on top.
Place the muffin tin (I put the muffin cases in the muffin tin so that they keep the shape rather than go flat) in the oven preheated to 180C and bake for about 20+ minutes. The muffins should be golden brown in colour and well-risen.

easy breakfast muffins

They are very fluffy in texture, moist and sweet. Good for breakfast or in a lunch box. They will keep well for 2-3 days in a tin.

what to do with the apple glut

You can leave them as they are, or drizzle a bit of icing on top. As Sasha is off school this week, until his school transport is sorted out, he helped me decorate the muffins with the glaze and fruit stars.

easy muffins

Sasha scoffed a couple of muffins as soon as they slightly cooled. Eddie ate one after school, and ceded "Not bad!" - Thanks for your kind words, son!

In this recipe I used Dorset Cereals Spectacular Grains Raspberries & Apple with toasted spelt & popped buckwheat which was one of the products in the latest Degustabox food box.
You can use any of the healthier cereal or granola as a topping.
Ingredients include grains (68%) [wholegrain toasted wheat flakes, toasted sweetened malted barley flakes, toasted sweetened malted spelt flakes, wholegrain malted oat flakes, wholegrain barley flakes, popped buckwheat, sultanas, dried apple slices and freeze dried raspberries, pumpkin and sunflower seeds and more.

I also used a Good Hemp Unsweetened Dairy Free Drink (also found in the last Degustabox), as I wanted to find out how it works in baking. I've tried the hemp milk in coffee, and wasn't very enthusiastic about it. It has an acquired taste. However, in pancakes and muffins you hardly notice the difference.
And as we don't follow the vegan diet, I have eggs and butter in my recipe.

what to do with the apple glut

And here are a few of the apple recipes that might help you to go through your apple glut:

Apples stewed in apple cider

Apple bread

Apple Sharlotka

Belgian Apple Tart

Apple Turnovers

What do you do with apples - preserves, bakes, salads?

January New Year New Me Degustabox

We are always looking forward to our Degustabox delivery, which arrives every month and is full of foodie surprises. This monthly food and drink subscription box is an excellent way to discover products which have only just appeared in the shops or those which might have been around for while, but you haven't had a chance to try them yet.
Thanks to Degustabox, I have found new favourites to add to our shopping list, including some products which I probably wouldn't have tried otherwise.

Each time the box arrives, it's a total surprise. You get a good selection of foods and drinks.
If you haven't tried Degustabox subscription box yet and would like to have a go, I have a whopping £7 off discount from your first box (and you can unsubscribe any time) - just use a code 8EVI8 when you place an order.
What did we receive in January Degustabox? Let's have a look.

food box

Generally I'm not a big fan of American chocolate, but all my guys love Hershey's Cookies'n'Creme candy bars. I occasionally buy it as a single bar, and even spotted some chocolate drops in this flavour.
It's a white chocolate flavoured candy bar with cookie pieces. My younger son and husband enjoy it.
I prefer it when chocolate products have a shorter list of ingredients and definitely less E-numbers.

Mallow & Marsh Coconut Marshmallow bar is handmade in the UK, using only natural ingredients, and each bar is under 100kcal each. This product is not included in all boxes, you might receive a different item instead.

Jordans Juicy Red Berry Frusli bars contain British wholegrain oat flakes, fruit pieces (strawberry and blueberry infused diced cranberries), blueberry juice, raisins, strawberry and raspberry flakes, chopped almonds etc. These are handy snacks for when you're feeling peckish, or are on the go and need some sustenance.

As January is a month when many people go on a diet after the excesses of Christmas overeating, there are quite a few healthy foods included in the latest Degustabox.
For example, Explore Cuisine Organic Edamame & Mung Bean Fettucine. It is a source of plant-based protein and fibre with the lowest level of carbs. It offers 22g of protein per 50g serving, which is almost 3x more than regular pasta.

Pulsin is a brand, well known for its health credentials. It's a range of gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian and vegan-friendly products. If you're looking for a boost of protein, help yourself to Pulsin Vanilla Choc Chop Protein Booster, which tastes of cookie dough. It's made with dairy free choc chips and contains 13g of plant based protein.
When you open the packaging, the bar doesn't look very appetising, and it has a strange aftertaste.

Pulsin Vanilla Whey Protein powder comes in a sachet. Simply add milk or water to make a healthy shake. It is rich in essential amino acids from grass fed cow's milk (suitable for vegetarians, but not vegans). You can add it to smoothies, porridge or cereals for an extra protein boost.

Miso Tasty Spicy Ramen Noodle Kits are a lovely kitchen staple for a quick and easy meal. The noodles come accompanied with a signature miso soup base and a seaweed garnish for an authentic experience. You can add your own toppings, like fresh coriander or spring onions, or just eat it as it is.

Wild Planet Albacore Tuna Steaks are ranked no.1 in the US by Greenpeace for sustainability. These wild tuna steaks are 100% pole & line caught, and cooked with no added salt.
Make a delicious tuna sandwich or salad (see my recipe for Tuna and orange salad), or cook soup, for example, Pearl barley and tuna soup.

Latin American Kitchen by Santa Maria is a colourful range of Latin flavours.
The Chipotle Mayo Topping is a useful condiment, when serving nachos or tacos, or in burgers and sandwiches. It has a lovely chipotle kick.

I used it in peppers stuffed with orzo (mixed with tomatoes and chipotle mayo).

Colombian Crunchy Chicken Bites Seasoned Corn Coating is a blend for light, oven-baked bites. The corn gives that extra crispiness.

Robinsons Fruit Cordial is a sophisticated twist to squash with combinations of real fruit and botanical flavours. One of three flavours is included in each food box. Raspberry, Rhubarb & Orange Blossom is a fruity refreshing drink, which would be great for summer.

Mahtay Yerba Mate Sparkling Tea is designed for health-conscious in mind. It is a blend of energy-giving South American yerba mate with coconut water and acai berries. It is a trendy refreshing drink for a new generation. It is an acquired taste, but promises health benefits in every drop.

LighterLife Fast Ready to Drink Shakes are perfect for people on a 5:2 diet, when you consume significantly less calories twice a week. This diet has many fans and followers. I tried it for a few months a couple of years ago, it didn't quite work for me. I felt hungry on diet days, and the weight loss was minimal. But so many people swear by this diet, and there are lots of inspiring stories online if you're looking into trying this diet yourself. These shakes are ready to drink, and can be consumed as part of the Fast plan as a protein hit or meal replacement.

And finally, Clipper Everyday Organic tea - a full-bodied rich black tea. All Clipper products are made with pure, natural ingredients. Very enjoyable brew, lovely with either a slice of lemon or milk.
